Abortion ban defeated in ABQ! And by 10%. But residents, students, activists, medical professionals and others will not back down, because they know the anti-abortion movement is on the move nationwide. An Operation Rescue (anti-abortion) organizer was interviewed when the results were released, projecting smug confidence that the right to abortion is on its way out across the country.
Huge shout out to @PersonhoodForWomen for taking a stand around the morality and necessity of abortion for women - changing minds and changing terms, to @RespectABQWomen for organizing and pushing every Democrat in Albuquerque to oppose the ban, to UNM students for openly and honestly grappling with questions of women’s oppression and liberation, to everyone who spoke out and stood up at last week’s Abortion Rights Emergency Forum & Rally/Speakout, and the abortion providers here that demonstrate resolve and commitment to women’s health, dreams, futures and lives in the face of adversity.
Albuquerque city and county residents, students, medical professionals, abortion providers and activists in growing numbers are seeing the need to link up local struggles around abortion rights into a nationwide counter-offensive of political resistance against the restrictions and clinic closures, change how millions of people are thinking about abortion by bringing out both the science and morality of abortion, and reclaiming the moral high ground.
Tomorrow we will rally at Civic Plaza at noon to send the message that we won’t back down, and resist the whole war on women. This rally is a celebration of the defeat of the local ban and organized defiance to the attacks on abortion nationwide, challenging everyone across the nation who does not want to see the right to abortion stripped away state by state, to stand up unapologetically demanding unrestricted and stigma-free abortion rights, for every woman in every state. This rally the day after the local victory promises to issue a challenge to the nation to wage uncompromising resistance against these bans and TRAP laws wherever they are proposed, and “turn the tide against the war on women.”
