Some of the Texts, Status Updates, and Tweets to Albuquerque

From LA, a decades-long clinic defender:

AIN’T NO POWER LIKE THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE, ‘CAUSE THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE DON’T STOP! SAY WHAT?? We won in Albuquerque, and we’re not stopping until every restriction on abortion is removed, every anti-abortion bill on the books is rescinded, and every asshole who thinks that a woman’ s right to control her own biology is at the political discretion of MEN is completely and utterly rendered irrelevant, powerless, and his stupidity shown up for what it is! Congratulations to all my brave, committed Stop Patriarchy friends who defended in Jackson and stayed on the ground, no doubt exhausted but exuberant, in Albuquerque to win this victory for the women of NM, and ALL women nationwide!

From Seattle, an organizer with Stop Patriarchy!:

Defeating this ban was a victory for women all across the nation.  Let’s fight to change the terms  and turn the tide, so that women’s lives can never again be put up for a vote, or attacked in any other way.  Let’s defeat this whole war on women….because the future is unwritten, and what future there’ll be, IS up to us!

From Jackson, an escort at the last abortion clinic in the state:

Victory in Albuquerque!  Thanks to all supporters!  Congratulations to the women of New Mexico from all of us in Mississippi!  Kudos to Stop Patriarchy for all that they did!

From Humboldt, a college freshman and Abortion Rights Freedom Rider:

Yes.  You all are heroes too.  We need to see people out celebrating.  We also need those to continue that fight because the Right [Wing] isn’t gonna back down so neither will we!

From New York City, a revolutionary:

Shout out to stoppatriarchy @prsnhood4women and all the warriors in victory in #ABQ - gaining strength, no stopping now!

Abortion RIGHTS: Stop avoiding it & start demanding it!

From Albuquerque, Day One…

by a member of Stop Patriarchy

Stop Patriarchy was welcomed warmly by local activists that have done a lot of work to fight for abortion rights, on a scientific and pro-woman basis, and to argue for an unapologetic stance in doing so.  We are uniting with these courageous and tireless folks throughout the week to change minds, break boundaries, and rally all those who support abortion rights to stand together in defiant opposition to this ban and the anti-abortion movement that would like to see a society-wide return to the dark ages, stand together in uncompromising support of abortion rights, and stand together in determination to see this world transformed into one where women are truly liberated.

Beyond these deeply determined circles, there seemed to me at first to be a bit of abortion fatigue in Albuquerque.  The last time Stop Patriarchy was here was in August on the Abortion Rights Freedom Ride, launching a nation-wide movement to end the attacks on abortion, changing the terms of the debate, and rallying others to stop relying on the Democrats for fundamental gains against this war on women.  At that time, Operation Rescue, an anti-abortion organization with a whole fascist agenda and sordid history of instigating violence against abortion providers, had just come through the town in a rampage.  In response, Personhood for Women organized a rally in which many people spoke out against those terror tactics, and to the need for abortion — yes, past 20-weeks, and at any point in her pregnancy.  Since then there has been a lot of advertising from both the “for” side and “against”… Watching TV for ten minutes, you see a commercial for and a commercial against the 20-week ban on abortion that residents will vote on next week, in this flashpoint of the attacks on abortion rights, the hometown of the practice of two out of only four late term abortion providers in the nation.  Walking through the halls of the student union at University of New Mexico you can see the fliers for both sides, one after the other after the other.

Nov. 4, 2013

As part of their “week of siege” Operation Save America held a “funeral for the unborn” today at the Capitol in Jackson, MS. Stop Patriarchy went to their event to reset the terms and make sure the world knows that this is fundamentally not a battle over babies, this is a battle over whether or not women will be free. If women cannot decide for themselves, when and whether they will have children, they cannot be free, and if women aren’t free, no one is free!

We entered the event with chants of “Without this basic right, women can’t be free, Abortion on Demand and Without Apology!”, “Forced motherhood is female enslavement!”, and “The bible taken literally is a horror!” The anti-abortion folks did not know what to do as we climbed the stairs and ‘stole the show’ if you will. We were able to occupy the stairs for a couple of minutes until police escorted us off. It was well worth it.

These anti-abortion Christian fundamentalist FASCISTS cannot be allowed to stand unopposed. Right now, they are not just the crazies, they are winning, and it is long past time that people stand up and create a situation where THEY are the ones put on the defensive for their dark ages morality and outright ignorance.

Dispatch from Day 1 in Jackson: Eating BBQ, Talking with Students, Standing Up for Abortion Rights

This dispatch, written by Sunsara Taylor, from our first day down here in Jackson, Mississippi standing up for abortion rights was first published at Revolution Newspaper.

Yesterday we arrived in Jackson, Mississippi, in the early afternoon. All the way down we were buzzing among ourselves about how outrageous it is that there is only one abortion clinic left in the State of Mississippi! We kept going back to the courage and moral example of Dr. Willie Parker, one of the two doctors who regularly flies into Mississippi to provide abortions, who had recently spoken about this at a program sponsored by Stop Patriarchy with me at Revolution Books in New York City. We also recalled the other courageous doctor and the staff at Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the escorts and local supporters of the clinic (like those with Wake Up Mississippi and the Hell No Campaigners who stood up against voter restrictions and a state amendment that would have granted personhood to fetuses a few years back) who we met during our time down here during the Abortion Rights Freedom Ride last summer. And we swapped stories about the Christian fascist groups like Operation Rescue and Operation Save America who will be terrorizing the last abortion clinic in Mississippi from November 2–6 and what it will be like to stand up against them all week.

Taking on the Anti-Abortion Siege in Albuquerque and Beyond

Originally appeared in Revolution Newspaper at REVCOM.US

Albuquerque, New Mexico has become a national focal point in the struggle over abortion rights in this country because it is the city where two out of the four doctors left in the country who perform later abortions practice. As described in the piece below, this city was targeted for threatening and woman-hating protest by the fascist anti-abortion group Operation Rescue during mid-August and it will remain the focus of the anti-abortion movement as they work to close these abortion providers down. Albuquerque was also one of the final stops on the Abortion Rights Freedom Ride, a month-long caravan that traveled from both coasts and down the middle of the country to stand up for abortion rights this past summer. The following was written by a member of a Revolution Club and Abortion Rights Freedom Rider.

The Abortion Rights Freedom Ride was happy to be invited to a rally on August 20 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to denounce the anti-abortion organization “Operation Rescue” as terrorists. The organizers put this rally together in six days, after Operation Rescue descended on their town: circulating “Wanted Poster”-style postcards complete with abortion doctors’ faces and home addresses, terrorizing the Holocaust and Intolerance Museum and demanding they install an exhibit on the “abortion holocaust,” hanging baby dolls from lampposts, and screaming “murderer!” outside the clinic, the homes of providers, and other local pro-choice medical facilities. This nightmare week was part of a push led by Operation Rescue to pass a bill to ban abortion in Albuquerque after a woman reaches 20 weeks of pregnancy. Albuquerque is the only city in the state with abortion clinics, and is home to two of the four doctors in the whole nation who openly provide late-term abortions to women who need them.

Here is some important history about Operation Rescue, and their murderous intentions when it comes to the targeting of late-term abortion providers. In 2006, Troy Newman, leader of Operation Rescue, said about their focus on passing restrictions in Kansas, “We also want to give the women driving up from Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma about 2½ hours to think about what they’re doing, and maybe change their minds.” Then, in 2009, the murder of Dr. George Tiller in his church in Wichita, Kansas sent a clear and chilling message to abortion providers that provide women with the opportunity to end their pregnancy at any point (a.k.a. “late term" abortion). Scott Roeder, the anti-abortion gunman who murdered Dr. Tiller, had gotten Tiller’s home address as well as the address of his church from Cheryl Sullenger, the Senior Policy Advisor for Operation Rescue. Sullenger served two years in prison for attempting to bomb an abortion clinic!

Vice Magazine Interview with Sunsara Taylor: The Abortion Freedom Riders

By Natalie Elliott

There’s no disputing that here in the US there seems to be some kind of state-level legislative epidemic hellbent on condemning female reproductive rights for ever more. Never mind the explosive support of Texas Senator Wendy Davis during her abortion-bill filibuster earlier this summer—Governor Rick Perry saw that the bill passed in the bat of an eye in an instantaneously appointed special session. A couple states away, in North Dakota, recent legislation aimed to prohibit abortions after six weeks but was paused by a last-minute injunction granted on July 31, mere hours before the new laws were set to take effect. Not that it matters much anyway: There’s only one remaining abortion clinic in the entire state. Meanwhile, Arkansas has instituted its own ban on abortions after twelve-weeks.

So it sucks, but what are you doing about it?

The “Abortion Holocaust”: A Monstrous Lie From the Christian Fascists

Operation Rescue is a highly organized section of the anti-abortion movement.  They recently attacked the town of Albuquerque, New Mexico, the only city in the state with any abortion providers at all, as well as home of two of the last four doctors who openly provide later term abortions for women who need them.  Operation Rescue has worked this year on introducing a ballot initiative that if passed, will introduce a 20-week ban on abortion in Albuquerque.

Operation Rescue, Justice 4 All, and other anti-abortion forces have said that the abortions performed between 1973 (the year Roe v. Wade was passed, making abortion legal in this country) and now, are equal to the HOLOCAUST committed by the Nazis on Jewish and other people in the 1930s and 1940s.  This past week when Operation Rescue came to Albuquerque, their youth group (called “Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust”) swarmed the local Holocaust Museum, claiming they would not leave until the museum added an abortion exhibit.  While some oppose the tactics of terror used recently and for too long by Operation Rescue, some of those still find the 20-week ban on abortion to be reasonable.

We have two things to say to those who would accuse women and abortion providers of being on par with Hitler and the Nazis:

1. The Nazis banned abortion.  The role of women under fascism is very, very clear: you are the incubators, the mothers, and the housekeepers; step outside of those lines, and punishment will be inflicted.*  Sound familiar?  Along with patriarchy, the fascist program as laid out by Mussolini and advanced by Hitler also required the unquestionable following of the Christian religion, the suppression of science and intellectualism, the banning of trade unions and other institutions and programs that help the working class, and the vicious imprisonment and execution of communists.

2. Fetuses are still only potential lives, even at 20 weeks.  Women on the other hand, are actually full human beings.  While most abortions are not later term, it is essential that women have the right to end an unwanted pregnancy at any stage.**  In a patriarchal society that still reduces women to objects, as sex objects or breeders or both, it is shockingly easy for the anti-abortion movement to promote this objectification and enslavement of women through a fetishizing of the fetus, and by taking the question of women out of the debate altogether.

What’s wrong with a 20-wk ban on abortion: “Because I love and care for the health of women…”

Following is the transcript of the speech by MaryLou Singleton, woman’s healthcare provider, and signer on the statement for Abortion on Demand & Without Apology, delivered at the Aug 20, 2013 rally in Albuquerque NM to protest Operation Rescue.  We’re reprinting this because of its clear and extremely helpful explanation on the dangers of a 20-week ban on abortion. As of now, 8 states have passed laws which ban abortions at 20 weeks.

"I want to thank all of you who have shown up today in support of women, health care providers and the Jewish community. I’m speaking today as a women’s healthcare provider and as a person who was raised in the anti-choice movement. My parents were the co-chairs of Pennsylvanians for Human Life and worked tirelessly to take the legal right to choose abortion away from American women. My sister was a member of Operation Rescue. I know the arguments of the anti-choice side forward and backward because their talking points were the daily discourse in my home while growing up. Like the teenagers who came to our town and bullied women at clinics, harassed our Holocaust museum, and terrorized a doctor’s family in their private residence, as a child I too believed what my parents and other authority figures told me about abortion.

Then I grew up.

No Home for the Anti-Abortion Movement

Conversation from the Rally to Denounce Terrorism in Albuquerque today, in response to the recent siege laid upon them by Operation Rescue.

Chanting, “Operation Rescue, GO HOME!”

1: “They should get out of Albuquerque.  Nobody wants them here.  They are outsider extremists who need to go back to Texas or wherever the fuck they came from.”

2: “What about the women in Texas?”

1: “Well…” (lightbulb) “Oh… yeah.”

2: “You know they do this all over.  They did this in Wichita. They target late term providers and states with very few providers, hoping to create these ‘states of refuge.’ Some of them live in those states, some of them don’t.  Bottom line, no matter where they’re from, is they want to enslave women.”

1: “That’s fucking true!  There should BE NO HOME for Operation Rescue!”

No room for compromise: There IS a WAR ON WOMEN

Albuquerque is the only city in all of New Mexico that provides abortions.  Doctors there comprise two of the four in the nation that will still openly provide later term abortion to women who need them, since Dr. Tiller was murdered.

In the last year, Operation Rescue has moved their “missionaries” out to ABQ, and they have successfully put a 20-week abortion ban on the ballot for October 8th.  Last week, they imported OpRescue fascists from over the country and laid siege to this city.

Ground Zero in Wichita: Dr. George Tiller and the Continued Attack on Women

by Ginny

I have been on this Abortion Rights Freedom Ride (ARFR) for twelve days.  I met up with the riders in Minneapolis; we then traveled to Fargo, North Dakota and Bellevue, Nebraska.  At each stop we met people who recognized that abortion rights are in a state of emergency.  We talked with abortion clinic personnel, groups of free-thinkers and atheists, various members of NOW and other locals who were interested in our banners, our riders, and our message.   Currently we are in Wichita.  This is not just another stop for me.  Events in the past, as well as the tensions of today, add meaning and depth to my time in this city.

Most people know the story:  On May 31, 2009, Dr. George Tiller, one of the very few doctors who still preformed late-term abortions, was shot and killed in his Wichita church.    Dr. Tiller’s wife, Jeanne, was in the choir at the time. The Wichita police arrested Scott Roeder of Merriam, Kansas.  Roeder, a member of the anti-abortion terrorist group Operation Rescue, was subsequently found guilty of murder and two counts of aggravated assault for threatening other church members with a gun.  He was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for fifty years.

The murder of Dr. George Tiller brought into focus a number of horrifying realities.  First, it became clear that the idea of abortion was, indeed, under attack.  Although many fought for and won the right to safe and legal abortion in the early 1970s (Roe v Wade, 1973), the social and political climate now denounced this right, calling it the “murder of an unborn child” rather than the reasoned choice of a woman.  This twisted logic seemed to justify the murder of an abortion provider and whipped anti-abortion fanatics into a frenzy.

DANGER! DANGER! NO CHOICE AT “A BETTER CHOICE” CPC IN WICHITA

image

Standing in front of the fake clinic, A Better Choice, it was striking to look through the “DANGER: crimes against women” tape we wrapped around their front door. I could see the national headquarters of Operation Rescue just across the driveway, proudly displaying the late clinic sign marked “CLOSED.” When the clinic was unable to afford rent, Operation Rescue seized on the opportunity to shut the clinic down entirely. Concentrated in these two buildings is the essence of the women-hating, Bible thumping, anti-abortion movement who thru their lies, and deceit, contributed to the climate where just a few years ago the anti-abortion vigilante, Scott Roeder, murdered Dr. Tiller in Wichita. The Abortion Rights Freedom Riders had an obligation to go to this strong hold of dark ages morality to take them on by indicting and exposing the clinic, and Operation Rescue.

image

image

Standing on the main street unfurling an “Abortion on Demand &Without Apology” banner, Freedom Riders began to chant, “without this basic right, women can’t be free: ABORTION ON DEMAND &WITHOUT APOLOGY!” The street was zooming with cars witnessing an all too rare message of “Abortion on Demand &Without Apology!” including a display that declared “fetuses are NOT babies” with real scientific clarity and truth.

image

One Freedom Rider read our prepared indictment with conviction and three of us brought it to the door. The center was mysteriously closed for the day, which according to their website is usually open on Fridays.
(see indictment here). We left the indictment behind so that when the door is finally opened, the indictment will be waiting.
