This afternoon Sunsara Taylor - initiator of End Porn and Patriarchy: The Enslavement and Degradation of Women - was arrested leaving St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a historically right-wing, anti-birth control, anti-abortion, anti-queer and anti-woman stronghold. Inside, a group of women and men delivered a message directed at the Catholic Church’s role in the international war on women.
They chanted “Abortion on demand and without apology!” “Forced motherhood is female enslavement!” and “Stop the war on women!”
Sunsara Taylor and Alice Woodward were roughly grabbed by security as they were leaving, and delivered to NYPD. Others were able to leave without arrest. Sunsara, a writer for Revolution newspaper, and Alice are being held at 100 Centre Street for arraignment Monday on charges of disorderly conduct and disruption of a religious service.
This action was part of a week of political protest in New York City in a 10 days “push” to “Take Patriarchy by Storm.” We have been bringing out the message that women are full human beings, not sexual objects for the pleasure of men, not breeders, and capable of full equality in every sphere. We have protested many of the sites that concentrate the oppression of women such as: Hooters, porn shops, and “crisis pregnancy” centers. Wherever this crew goes we challenge a political situation where people aren’t outraged by the subjugation of women.
Come out tomorrow (Monday, August 13) for the Anti-Patriarchy Talent Show at 7pm at Revolution Books 146 W. 26th, NYC OR at 100 Centre Street outside the court if they’re not released by then.
